A Message from our Executive Director

The San Marcos Promise (TSMP) is an education foundation serving all 21,000 students in The San Marcos Unified School District. TSMP builds dreams, pathways and prosperity , guiding and supporting students on their journeys to college and into the workforce. We are the bridge connecting education, business & industry, and community leaders to impact student futures. We need everyone’s help, as we are all stakeholders in the education system; our local schools are educating future employees, business owners and community leaders.
Our students are counting on us to help them build their dreams and future pathways, and we are counting on our students as our future workers and leaders, to help our local economy thrive and prosper.
To highlight the power of partnerships in changing the trajectory of student futures, I’d like to reflect on the relationship we’ve developed with Dr. Zachary Nelson of Nelson Orthodontics. Dr. Nelson learned about TSMP by participating in our inaugural Future Fair last April. Dr. Nelson and his wife, Danica, attended our Promise (adult) Prom in May, and became even further involved by participating in our Senior Exit Interviews at San Marcos High School later that month. Dr. Nelson expressed an interest in helping to make an even greater impact on the future of one of our students by offering free braces! Dr. Nelson said this was a way he could give back in his profession and knows the positive impact it would make in the life of a student. Ari Arango, one of our Scholar/Ambassador Alumni, got her braces on in July! Our partnership with Dr. Nelson continues to grow as he has since become a monthly donor to TSMP!
“The opportunity given to me by Nelson Family Orthodontics has been a surreal and life changing. Braces were never a consideration or a possibility for myself. Mine and my family’s financial situation allowed for attention on essentials and nothing else. Every time I go to Nelson Family Orthodontics I am interacting with people who are just as excited as I am in my smile and progress! It has been an incredible experience so far; watching the process and gaining more confidence in my smile!” -Ari Arango
Thank you to Dr. Nelson for your support and belief in our mission. Together we are changing lives!

Education Coordinator Corner

Next Gen Personal Finance research team did an extensive study of over 11,000 high schools throughout the United States to find out which states and school districts mandated a stand alone semester of personal finance to graduate. It was found that only 1% of California high schools have such a requirement. Personal finance/financial education is imperative for students en route to successful futures. To help in this effort, our education coordinators are introducing:  Money Wise ! A series of workshops on financial literacy beginning with checking accounts, debit cards, and banking basics using  Next Gen Personal Finance curriculum.
It is recommended that students register for both sessions.

The San Marcos Promise was part of the planning committee for this year’s Manufacturing and Engineering Day on October 1st at CSUSM and worked with our schools to bring students. Mission Hills High, San Marcos High, Twin Oaks High, Double Peak School, San Elijo Middle School, and Woodland Park Middle School all brought a busload of students to expose them to the many careers and opportunities within the manufacturing industry. Students were able to talk with many of the industry leaders and got hands-on experience with tools and technology used within the industry.
Local companies such as Hunter Industries, Viasat, Nordson, Walmart Labs, Solatude, Genentech, just to name a few, participated to inspire our next generation of manufacturing and engineering professionals.
Special thanks to Kristin Maccarrone from Mira Costa TCI and to Erik Bruvold, CEO of North County EDC, for heading the committee.

Dressed for Success!

Preparing our students to make their best first impression!

We are excited to announce that our TSMProfessional Career Closet is now open! Any high school student who needs professional clothing for an interview, networking event, internship, etc. can sign up to come to our office where our ambassadors will help each student pick out an outfit!

Thank you to all of our community members who have donated professional clothing to make this dream a reality.

Students will be asked to work with our Education Coordinators at each high school prior to receiving their outfit. This will ensure each student is prepared for success!
Our team of Ambassadors, under the leadership of Leeluleilani Stockton, have dedicated countless hours to make the Career Closet a reality for our high school students.

Updates
This past Spring, TSMP offered LEAP classes at Discovery Elementary and Knob Hill Elementary. Some of the classes offered included: Robotics, Art, Gardening, Innovation, Cooking and more!
We were thrilled to present Discovery Elementary with a check in the amount of $1275 at their October flag salute!
We’re proud to announce that LEAP continues to expand. We will be offering LEAP classes again in the Spring at the following 5 locations:
  • Discovery Elementary
  • Double Peak School
  • Knob Hill Elementary
  • La Mirada Academy
  • Twin Oaks Elementary
More information & registration for Spring LEAP classes will be available soon!

Our Learning Enrichment to Achieve Promise (LEAP) program is one of the best afterschool and summer enrichment programs in the county for K-8 students.

LEAP helps students discover new interests and passions and helps them gain critical 21st century skills such as adaptive problem solving, collaborative communication, and digital fluency.
Not only is it taught by our extraordinary credentialed SMUSD teachers, the teachers are able to design a class in an area they are especially passionate about, with an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics). Students are exposed to classes they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to take during their school day.
A huge added benefit of LEAP is that some of the proceeds go back to the school who hosts LEAP.

Warrior Village Project

TSMP is a proud fiscal sponsor to the Warrior Village Project, spearheaded by Mr. Mark Pilcher and coming to fruition at San Marcos High School in Mr. Chris Geldert’s Woodshop class. The Warrior Village Project is helping to provide permanent, affordable housing to homeless veterans while training the next generation of homebuilders.
Thank you to our generous community supporters and volunteers, to Mr. Pilcher, Mr. McSweeney from BIA, Mr. Zeait at SMHS, and to Mr. Geldert who works tirelessly everyday sharing this amazing experience with his students.
This is a perfect example of the importance of connections and demonstrates the impact it can have, not only in the lives of students, but the community at large.

Thank you to The Rite Aid Foundation

The Rite Aid Foundation is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of children in communities they serve. To further advance those efforts, in 2018, The Rite Aid Foundation announced the addition of KidCents Regional Grants to its overall grantmaking portfolio.
The grants significantly expand the reach of KidCents by helping nonprofit organizations fund specific out-of-school time programs focused on children’s nutrition, physical fitness and academic success.
The San Marcos Promise is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a KidCents Regional Grant from The @RiteAid Foundation totaling $15,000! Thanks to the generosity of the foundation, we will be able to add transportation and additional scholarships to students in need for this summer’s LEAP Program.
Thank you to The Rite Aid Foundation for your support!
