A Message from our Executive Director

Earlier this month, Superintendent Dr. Carmen Garcia planned a Back-to-School W elcome Breakfast for our entire SMUSD family. Having over 2,200 staff members in one space was energizing and inspiring! The San Marcos Promise (TSMP) was given the opportunity to introduce ourselves and our mission, as well as highlight the value and support we bring to the 21,000 students and their families in our district. Two first generation college students, Alejandro Contreras (PACE Scholar alumni and current TSMP Board Member), and Ari Arango(current PACE Scholar and former TSMP Ambassador), spoke about the positive impact their teachers had on their lives (both attended elementary through high school in SMUSD), as well as what TSMP has done to help advance their college and career pursuits.

Together we are changing the trajectory of students’ lives, and hearing their testimonies reminded all 2,200 of us that what we do everyday as educators is so much more than just a job.

The San Marcos Promise is the bridge connecting education, business and industry, and community leaders to impact student futures. Thank you to all of our donors and partners. Because of you, we’re able to provide valuable resources, experiences and opportunities for SMUSD students.

A Message from our Executive Director

W e are thrilled to announce the winners of our Employee Contribution Opportunity Drawing! Because of our generous SMUSD employees, we have had a 96% increase in employees who now donate, which brings us to a total of 155 SMUSD monthly employee donors! Thank you for your support!

Congratulations to one of our new SMUSD employee donors, and opportunity drawing winner, Jay Newcomer from Discovery Elementary! Thank you for your monthly contribution!

There are employees who have been donating to TSMP for the past several months or even years, so we wanted to add an additional opportunity drawing for that group. Any employee who had been giving a monthly contribution before August 16th was entered into a separate drawing.Congratulations to our current employee donor winner, Nancy Lucio, who works in Instructional Services at the District Office. We truly appreciate your monthly contribution and support!

New TSMP Ambassadors

Ashley Sanchez

I have been fortunate to spend my entire school career so far in San Marcos. I went to San Marcos Elementary, San Marcos Middle School, and San Marcos High School. I was very involved in the AVID Program at San Marcos High. I currently attend Palomar College where I am majoring in Psychology, and hope to become a clinical therapist.

I’m super excited to become a TSMP Ambassador because I want to be able to help others see that they can go to college like me and help them realize all the opportunities that our schools and foundation provide for our students. I have spoken to parents on a few student panels and want to help further our outreach efforts to the community as well.

My entire education has been here in San Marcos. I went to Richland Elementary,W oodland Park Middle, and Mission Hills High School. I could not picture myself anywhere but San Marcos, so I am now attending CSUSM, and majoring in Biology with an emphasis on Physiology. I hope to help children one day, whether it be in an educational or medical setting. I am so excited to become a TSMP Ambassador because I value education, and wish for our community to have all the tools needed to succeed in college. I want to reach out to the community and be the help to encourage others on a journey that can seem daunting. TSMP has been much more than just a tool for me in my college years but has been the extra support and push to give my education my full effort, and I want others to experience the same. I am passionate about helping others and making sure everyone is happy. I also LOVE to play soccer!

New Education Coordinator

The San Marcos Promise is thrilled to introduce our new Education Coordinator, Rogelio “Roy” Huerta. Roy is a proud graduate of both Mission Hills High School and Cal State San Marcos. In addition, he is a proud PACE Scholar Alumni! Roy will be working primarily at San Marcos and Twin Oaks High Schools throughout the year. Welcome,Roy!

“The San Marcos Promise guides and helps students further their education and acquire their dream jobs, and I’m a product of that promise. I’ve lived in San Marcos my whole life and went to San Marcos schools for a grand total of 18 years. When I graduated from Mission Hills High School, I wasn’t sure what degree to pursue or what career I wanted but I did know I wanted

to work closely with people. I enrolled at CSUSM and decided to start working on campus at my university’s outreach office where I was granted the opportunity to work for Trio Upward Bound. I instantly fell in love with my job as I was helping students reach their full potential and further their education. I knew at that point that education was my passion. I recently graduated from Cal State University San Marcos with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in business. I am now a proud High School Educational Coordinator for Pima Medical Institute and I’m excited to work for this great community that helped me achieve my life’s goals..”

College Expo & Future Fair

In conjunction with San Marcos Unified School District & SMUSD Career/Technical Education Programs, The San Marcos Promise supports an annual College Expo in the fall each year which draws over 1,000 students and families to the event. It is open to all students and their families in the San Marcos Unified School District. This year we are combining the College Expo and Future Fair into one amazing San Marcos Unified district-wide college & career event!

As we know, not every student will choose the same path after high school- some will choose to begin an apprenticeship program, some will attend a vocational program, others will choose to serve in the military, and others will begin at a community college or a 4 year university. In an effort to expose our students to the many opportunities available in their future, we invite representatives from all of the above to talk with students and families about the programs they offer. We’re excited to add our businesses and industry partners to this year’s event to help make college and career even more relevant to all students!
